Don't Look Back

How could he go on
life was too much
the days of his past
had left a cruel touch

It was never that others
had been abusive
it was what he had done
he could not forgive

When he was young
he'd not answered the call
folks were left wanting
now he felt guilty and small

As he looked back
his pain became great
he was stopped in his tracks
that feeling “TOO LATE”

Guilt had taken him down
depression set in
he'd played the game of life
he just couldn't win

Was it time to give up
cash in his chips
then the strangest thing happened
words came from his lips

Quit looking back
or you'll never move on
life still has purpose
don't sit here withdrawn

Cast your eyes forward
move on, up ahead
there's another who needs you
your life is their bread

Looking back only delays
all the good you can do
stop regretting your past
before it kills you

How I Wish I had the Answer to the Question "HOW?"

We all have a purpose
that should be practiced in boldness
on this journey we know as our life

Individuals all
with our own given call
to relieve another from strife

In many ways we're all equals
and can often be sequels
continuing the work of another

As they've made a great start
it's been a work from their heart
now it's our turn to lift up a brother

Our hearts will be gifted
as from gutters they're lifted
even if all that can be offered is hope

If for a moment they're able
to see life as stable
it's the one thing that might help them to cope

You see there once was a day
they were working class people
who could afford to live
incomes never this feeble
but the way things have changed
they can't supply for their need
that's been caused by a sickness
known as corporate greed

This life in the gutter
is no way to live
it's the spirit of man
leaking out through a sieve
an end
must be found
homelessness
bound
if from the street
they're to vanish
it's the cause
we must banish

There Is Freedom Within The Fence

Within the fence
chihuahuas are huge
as they bark at the pit bull
it's their turf, a refuge

Free to do as he pleases
after all in his yard
he becomes the fiercest of warriors
and that fence is his guard

While in the fence it doesn't matter
the size of his foe
his bravery comes forth
and he puts on a great show

Yes this little dog knows
he's got enough common sense
that his freedom exists
inside of the fence

A Lifelong Childhood

Somebody once said
“You only have one childhood,
make it last a lifetime”

Responsibility truly has its place
but is it necessary to never have fun
we let life get too damn serious
seems as we're always on the run

Have we forgot how to play
is that what we've done
made life nothing but toil
how dull Jack has become

For a moment think back
to when you were a boy
playin' ball with the guys
how it brought you great joy
you girls had your hop-scotch
and skipping of rope
do you remember that feeling
that joy brought us hope

Life then was grand
yes, oh so good
during those wonderful days
of our childhood

We could find that hope once again
if for an hour each day
we'd turn away from the rat race
and take time out to play

Lies, Ya Gotta Love 'em

How people love lies
as they hide from their eyes
those ugly old truths
they so often despise

But these lies they devise
create a life of disguise
and more often than not
will bring their demise

Their lives downward spiral
as an act of reprisal
keeping all they say straight
for lies need revival

How perfectly vile
the reward for denial
of the facts of the matter
they've ignored all the while

I must then surmise
that it's totally unwise
to harbor untruths
as they bring a terrible prize

I see no surprise
how life simplifies
when it's the truth that is told
instead of the lies

Sure Could Use A Little Good News

The news of today
has taken its toll
of so many men
who had thought themselves whole

Their spirits have waned
and that is no way to live
yet we continue to be
so self destructive

Torn down
ripped apart
inundated with filth
this world does impart

Living as shadows
of who they once were
while the death tolls rise
and politicians keep score

Not only the wars
but famine as well
as many a people
are already in Hell

The murders and rapes
adding up every day
no longer safe for children
to just go out and play

Where the hell are we headed
is there no way to fall back
to those days filled with love
it seems its that which we lack

It's time to take a step back
away from this madness
and hopefully put to an end
these days filled with sadness

Return to those days
when people respected each other
and once again treat folks
as if all were their brother

The Hypocrite

Stop, that's mine
I'm throwin' it away
no you can't have it
just go away

Keep your dirty hands off
you know that it ain't yours
just get outta my trash
or this'll become war

I had to pay for all of that
see that stuff it wasn't free
am I gonna have to call the cops
get up from off of your knee

Feed your children
not from my can
get a job
be a man

Your clothes are filthy
you know you stink
I ain't runnin' no charity
if that's what you think

You better get to movin'
leave that tent there alone
get your hands off that bedroll
let that bridge be you home

I don't care if they're hungry
so what if they're cold
even if I were to help
they'd still grow up in your mold

Always wantin' somethin'
is how you folks are
how about you work for stuff
you really are bizarre

I'm gonna have to leave now
yeah, I'll leave you in the lurch
but my neighbors they'll be watchin' you
while I'm away at church
